In a Best Buy in New Jersey, several acrobatic thieves have pulled off an elaborate heist that has law enforcement officials scratching their heads. The heist resulted in the theft of over $26,000 worth of computer equipment from the New Brunswick store.
Apparently, the thieves cut a hole in the roof of the store, which was specifically designed to enter the store where the security cameras were obscured by advertising banners. The thieves lowered themselves down the16 foot drop, directly over a 10 foot display holding several laptops. The thieves seemed to have prior knowledge of the motion detecting sensors in the store, since they never even touched the floor (which would have set off the alarm).
In all, 20 Apple laptops were stolen off of the display racks. The store’s employees were only aware of the heist when they arrived at 6:30 the following morning, by noticing the giant hole in the ceiling.
“High level of sophistication,” said Detective James Ryan, a spokesman from the New Jersey police department. “They never set off any motion sensors. They never touched the floor. They rappelled in and rappelled out.” The thieves successfully avoided all security equipment in the store, including motion sensors, alarms and security cameras.
The thieves were able to escape from the roof by grasping a 3 inch metal pipe that runs up the side of the building. Police reports say that they were able to discern their method of escape from several boot prints that were discovered on the pipes.
A security expert commented on the story, suspecting this burglary to be the work of a professional team of thieves. They had extensive knowledge of the store, including the specific point in the ceiling through which their entry would be obscured by security cameras. The fact that the thieves were equipped with the correct tools to pull of their heist also hinted at extensive planning for the heist.
Right now, law enforcement is not treating this as an isolated incident.
This heist is a prime example of the sophistication some motivated criminals. Many people mistakenly believe that burglars are always opportunistic individuals, taking advantage of an unlocked window or door. The truth of the matter is, some thieves make a professional living from a life of crime, with enough knowledge to surpass most basic security measures.
