LA GARD SmartLinc II & SmartPoint: Open, Code, Time Delay, Battery

Safe lock troubleshooting › LA GARD (dormakaba) › SmartPoint and SmartLinc II (logic module with LCD, optional fingerprint)

The LA GARD SmartLinc II and SmartPoint are biometric-ready safe locking systems (made by Kaba Mas, now dormakaba). A logic module with a keypad and LCD (with P and OK keys) controls up to five locks. The SmartPoint adds a fingerprint reader; the SmartLinc II is the same without fingerprints. They are meant to run on AC power with a 9-volt back-up battery. This guide covers how to open the lock, change your code, use a time delay, dual code or time lock, replace the back-up battery, and what the wrong-try penalty is.

Is this your lock?

  • A logic module (keypad and LCD) that says “ENTER CODE” or “SELECT LOCK” when you press a key. On a SmartPoint there is also a fingerprint scanner (“SCAN YOUR FINGER”).
  • It runs on AC power (A/C power adapter) as the primary source. The 9-volt alkaline back-up battery is in a compartment at the bottom of the keypad.
  • It can control up to five locks. Each lock can have its own time delay. Codes are six digits.
  • LA GARD’s paper manuals are the SmartPoint / SmartLinc II installation (701.087), master (702.087), manager (703.087), user (704.087) and quick start (721.107) guides.

How to open the lock

  1. Press any key to power up the SmartPoint. The display shows ENTER CODE (or SELECT LOCK if there are two or more locks).
  2. If there are two or more locks, select the lock you want.
  3. Enter your valid six-digit user code (and scan your finger if a fingerprint is set up).
  4. The display shows LOCK = 1, OPEN! Open the door within 3 seconds.

Fingerprint only access

  1. Press any key. Select the lock if needed. The display shows P TO SCAN, OK FOR CODE.
  2. Press P. The display shows SCAN YOUR FINGER. Place your finger on the scanner.
  3. A valid print shows LOCK = 1, OPEN! Open the door within 3 seconds. A bad print shows FINGERPRINT ERROR!
  4. If your finger cannot be read, press OK, enter your code and scan your print. The system matches it one to one.

With a time delay

  1. Enter a valid user code (and fingerprint if set up). The display shows STARTING TIME DELAY and then the LOCK and DELAY MM:SS countdown. Press P and then OK to cancel the delay.
  2. When the delay ends the display shows P TO SCAN, OK FOR CODE and then an open window countdown. During the open window the unit beeps 2 times every 10 seconds.
  3. During the open window, enter a valid code (and scan your finger). The display shows LOCK = 1, OPEN! Open the door within 3 seconds.

With dual code

  1. Enter a valid six-digit user code, then at 2ND CODE enter a second valid six-digit code (and scan fingers if set up). The display shows LOCK = 1, OPEN!
  2. With a time delay and dual code, enter a valid code to start the delay, and in the open window enter any two valid codes.
  • An invalid code shows NOT VALID USER! The display powers off after 30 seconds without use and shows the date and time before it does.
  • In a system with an outer door lock set to AUTO OPEN, an authorized user who opens the inner lock has the outer lock open automatically first.
  • If the display shows LOCK = #, OFFSET = ##, the lock has an open offset and counts to it.

Back-up battery

The SmartPoint system is meant to run on AC power. Battery power should be back-up only. LA GARD says to use alkaline batteries only (we recommend Procell). The low battery warning is a repeated audio and visual signal (LCD readout and repeated beeping) while you open the lock: it means the back-up battery is low and should be replaced.

  1. Remove the black plastic battery compartment cover at the bottom of the keypad by gently pulling downward on its handle.
  2. Let the battery and its leads drop down out of the compartment. If it does not drop, gently pull the battery.
  3. Unsnap the connector from the two terminals on top of the battery. Never pull on the battery leads.
  4. Snap a new high quality 9-volt alkaline battery onto the clip.
  5. Push the battery and the leads completely up into the compartment and press the cover back on.
  • If the safe has no AC adapter and runs only on battery, change the battery more often, especially with a time delay or time lock.

How to change your code

Always do this with the door OPEN.

Test the lock several times before you close the door. If you do not see the verification message, the old code is still valid: wait 30 seconds and repeat the steps.

  1. Press any key to power up the SmartPoint. The display shows ENTER CODE or SELECT LOCK.
  2. Select the lock if there are two or more.
  3. Enter zero six times (0-0-0-0-0-0).
  4. Enter your existing six-digit code one time.
  5. Enter your new six-digit code two times (and scan your finger after the second entry, if a fingerprint is set up).
  6. If it is valid, the display shows CODE CHANGED. If the two entries do not match it shows CONFIRM CODE NOT MATCH.
  7. Test the lock several times before you close the door.
  • Adding users and fingerprints, setting the time lock and the other system settings are done by the master or manager with the keypad or the PC set-up software. Call us if you need that done.
  • Duress: if the unit is connected to an alarm system, enter your code with the last number one higher or lower, or use your duress fingerprint. For 2-9-2-9-2-9 the duress code is 2-9-2-9-2-8 or 2-9-2-9-2-0.

Signals and messages

What you see and hearWhat it means
Double signal (LCD readout and two beeps)The entry is valid or accepted.
Triple signalThe entry is invalid or not accepted.
ENTER CODE / SELECT LOCKThe unit is awake. Enter your code, or choose the lock.
LOCK = 1, OPEN!A valid code. Open the door within 3 seconds.
NOT VALID USER!The code is not valid.
FINGERPRINT ERROR!The print was not valid or not placed directly on the scanner.
Repeated beeping and LCD readout while openingThe back-up battery is low.
2 beeps every 10 secondsThe time delay open window is running.

Wrong try penalty

Four consecutive invalid codes start a five-minute delay. Two additional invalid codes begin another five-minute delay. Wait it out before you try again.

Time menu: immediate time lock and extension

If a time lock was set up, users can use the time menu. It only works if an opening period is stored in the Time Lock Standard Week.

  1. Immediate time lock (closes the lock until the next opening period): press any key, then hold down the 9 button until the display shows ACCESS TIME MENU. Enter your user code (and finger). At IMMEDIATE TIME LOCK? press OK, then OK again at SELECT, T.L. SET = 1, then OK a second time at Do You CONFIRM?.
  2. Extension (if it was turned on with the PC): get to the time menu as above and press P to reach EXTENSION TIME. Press OK, choose the lock, and press P to set the extension in 30-minute steps (up to 2 hours). Press OK to confirm. The display shows EXTENSION SET!
  • A time lock extension can only be used once per time lock period.

If it still won’t open

The display does not come on

Check the A/C power adapter. If the system is on battery only, replace the 9-volt back-up battery in the bottom of the keypad.

It says NOT VALID USER!

The code is wrong or has not been set up for you. Four wrong codes in a row start a five-minute delay. Ask your manager.

I changed my code and now it does not work

If CODE CHANGED did not appear, the old code is still valid. Wait 30 seconds and repeat the steps. If it did appear, your new code is the one to use.

My finger will not read

Place it directly on the scanner. If it still fails, press OK, enter your code and then scan your finger: the system does a one-to-one match.
